How Much Does Medical School Cost

How Much Does Medical School Cost MCAT Medical School Admissions Getting into medical school requires mental and emotional preparation, as well as financial readiness. Med school is expensive, and everyone who wants to be a doctor knows this. If, despite the looming financial burden and the premed critics you will face, you are still thinking about applying to med school, below is a summary of the financial cost of attending medical school. Proceed with caution... Medical School Tuition According to the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), the median tuition in 2013-2014 was $31,783 for resident students at public institutions, $55,294 for non-resident students at public institutions, $52,093 for resident students at private med schools, and $50,476 for non-resident students at private med schools. These figures do not include health insurance, housing, and other expenses. So, for four years of medical school, a public school would cost $127,132 for resident students and $221,176 for non-resident students. At private schools, the entire cost of medical education totals $208,372 for resident students and $201,904 for non-resident students. Fees and Expenses in Medical School On top of tuition, there are other mandatory fees and expenses to consider in your financial planning for medical school. These mandatory fees include student health center, student services, student health insurance, student aid fund, programs, malpractice insurance, disability insurance, and miscellaneous fees that amount to about $2,235 per year or $8,940 for the duration of medical school. Other expenses include room and board at an average of $20,000, and books and supplies at $1,572 per year. You will also have to allot money for the $535 national medical board exam which you will take in your 2nd and 4th year, and your $1,140 clinical skills exam which you will take during your 2nd year of med school. Finally, you should, of course, also budget for personal expenses. For the sake of the calculations below, let’s assume that you will have to spend $5,300 for personal expenses, food, and transportation per year. Total Cost of Attending Medical School Considering all of figures above, the total cost of attending medical school, depending on if you are attending a private or public institution and if you are a resident or non-resident, can be seen below: $165,154 for resident students at public med school $259,198 for non-resident students at public med school $246,394 for resident students at private med school $239,926 for non-resident students at private med school As these numbers are overwhelmingly high, it’s important to keep in mind that there are scholarships and financial aid options available. You just have to know where to look. 20 Hours Of Portuguese

20 Hours Of Portuguese Teddy Nee runs a popular language learning blog called Nees Language Blog. Hes also taking  finished the 2015 New Years Language Challenge to learn Portuguese for the Challenge. Reposted with permission. Original post here.  20 Hours Of Portuguese 20-hour language course is certainly short compared with what many study programs can offer. Imagine that you might spend the whole one hour on learning alphabets and telling people about your name, your hometown, your occupation, etc. in a language course. If you join a course with many students, your learning pace can go only as fast as the slowest student. That might not be efficient for some students. The solution is either to do self-learning or to take a 1-on-1 course. Honestly, I am not a big fan of language class, however, there is an activity called Italki Challenge that looks so interesting that I decided to give it a try. It is about learning any languages in 20 hours and I have just completed it. The Achievement I feel much more confident in speaking Portuguese now compared with before, and I have also proven that I can hold conversation only in Portuguese, not just once but for the entire 20-hour lessons. That is such an amazing experience that I have ever had. Well, of course, I used dictionary sometimes, or asked it in Spanish since my tutor also speaks Spanish, and she is teaching it too. So, if any of you would like to have a Spanish course, you can also contact her. Here is her Italki profile. Besides my tutor, I had also had the chance to speak Portuguese for a while with a Sao Tomean friend. That was my first time speaking Portuguese offline. It certainly gives a different experience when you are speaking face-to-face with a person that stands less than 1 meter from you. After finishing Italki Challenge, I have started to take the learning into a higher level by reading about programming and engineering in Portuguese. The reason is simply because I am working as an IT engineer. Next Challenge? The last Italki Challenge was not the first, so I believe that there will be another Italki Challenge in the near future. I strongly recommend you to take part in it, learn any languages, widen your knowledge, talk with people from the other part of the world, gain experience, and be a world citizen. Did you also finish the Italki Challenge? Share your experience with us in the comment box. Images. This Reading Program Completer Gained Confidence from Kumon

This Reading Program Completer Gained Confidence from Kumon This Reading Program Completer Gained Confidence from Kumon Ankit, 11-years-old, Math Level L Reading Program Completer Considered to be one of the most influential scientists of the 20th Century, Albert Einstein’s work paved the way for future groundbreaking discoveries and continues to inspire young scientists to make an impact on the world we live in today. He said, “Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. The important thing is not to stop questioning.” 11-year-old Kumon Student Ankit not only looks to Einstein for inspiration, but he also embodies his natural sense of wonder, and never stops questioning the unknown. For Ankit, his learning doesn’t stop when the school bell rings at the end of the day. His curiosity leads him to dive into books to try to understand the way the universe works. With a dream of becoming a physicist, Ankit credits Kumon for giving him the confidence and ability to learn independently. “In Kumon, I’ve become more independent and this applies out of the classroom as well,” said Ankit. “I’ve also learned that my success relies on me, and no one else. To be successful and to help you move forward, you have to truly understand the formulas behind things and how they work. Kumon has given me the ability to think that way.” Ever since Ankit enrolled in Kumon when he was just five years old, he has been focused on the goals that lie ahead. Before entering middle school, Ankit successfully completed the Kumon Reading Program. His love for reading was fueled by Kumon, and he can now say he has already analyzed high school level literature. Determined to also complete the Kumon Math Program, Ankit is impressively working with logarithmic equations and developing skills to solve derivatives. Ankit has taken his knowledge to the competitive level. He was selected to represent his school at the 2018-2019 North Carolina Science Fair and was awarded Honorable Mention for his work. When he is not coming up with a new scientific discovery, Ankit enjoys writing and maintaining a blog comprised of poems, short stories, and even has a book in the works! “I want to be a physicist when I grow up because I want to find out the secrets and the workings of the universe,” said Ankit. “I also want to be a writer because I want to create worlds like the ones in the sci-fi books I read.” What do you enjoy most about Kumon? I enjoy the independence that Kumon has given me. It gives me the ability to learn concepts on my own. It doesn’t outright give me the answer. Instead, it drops little hints that lead me to the main goal and leave the rest for me. If you ask for help, the Instructor will lead you, not tell you. How has Kumon helped you academically? Kumon has helped me study several grades’ worth of material in less than a year, and as a result, helps me learn material years before I even see it in school. Combine that with the independence I’ve gained and focus skills, other subjects like social studies or science also benefit. What’s the most beneficial thing you’ve learned in Kumon? I feel that the most helpful thing I’ve learned (and am still learning) is how important it is to not get distracted from your work. It’s important to concentrate as hard as your mind can, and not allow yourself to be distracted from the background noise. If you could sum up your Kumon experience in one word, what would it be? Kumon has helped me find a world where Shakespearean plays are a daily indulgence, and numbers don’t always represent values. Before I started, I imagined I had a molehill in front of me. Now, the mist has cleared, and I can see a mountain. I’ve realized that if I could go up to the end of high school mathematics while I am only ending elementary school, there’s so much more potential that lies ahead of me. My one word would be: “Insightful.” Who is your biggest inspiration and why? One of my main inspirations is Albert Einstein. Most people would think that I’m inspired by him because he persisted even while his teachers told him that he couldn’t do anything. He sought to find a new way of thinking about the universe and physics, even when there were barely any studies about space before him. He inspires me because he was able to find something new â€" an original idea. What’s your favorite book and why? I have 200+ books in my bedroom, so you can probably guess why it’s hard for me to find one favorite. After carefully picking, I chose Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials by James Dashner. There are a lot of reasons why I call this book one of my favorites. First, I like it because it isn’t a fairy tale. In fact, the main characters even get captured in the end. Overall it is a great read and I highly recommend it! How did you feel when you found out you were selected to attend the 2019 Kumon Student Conference?   I felt elated! It was satisfying to see how hard work pays off in the end. What was your experience like at the 2019 Kumon Student Conference, and what was your favorite part? At the Student Conference, I felt a sense of belonging to be with other so similar, yet different, Kumon Students and high achievers. I was inspired by the stories of former Kumon Students and their success. My favorite part was the Mummy Game, in which we had to work as a group to solve clues and puzzles to find an “exit.” What advice would you give to kids just starting Kumon? It might seem boring or hard, but if you pursue the work at your own pace and set goals for yourself, you will find yourself yearning for progress and learning. This Math Program Completer is Driven by Perseverance

This Math Program Completer is Driven by Perseverance This Math Program Completer is Driven by Perseverance Pragun, 15-years-old, Math Program Completer 15-year-old Pragun is far from your average freshman high school student. He has already grasped advanced math concepts, like differential calculus, due to his successful completion of the Kumon Math Program. Pragun has been enrolled in Kumon since he was 8-years-old and has gained valuable skills and knowledge that’s molded him into the accomplished student he is today. Perseverance has been the number one key to his success and will be a driving force in achieving his future aspiration of becoming a doctor. “Kumon has helped me to not give up and persevere through difficult challenges,” said Pragun. “The more difficult a challenge is, the greater the reward. Kumon has taught me to not be afraid of any challenges, but rather enjoy working through them because I know I can overcome anything.” In the 7th grade, Pragun competed in the VEX Robotics Competition, and walked away with the VEX Team Award. Teams are tasked with the challenge of building and designing a robot, while using various components of STEM. Pragun also put his math skills to the test in a Math League Competition and received 4th place in the target round. This round of the competition challenges students to solve four pairs of problems, with only six minutes to complete. While he’s extremely proud of his many accomplishments, he knows that that none of it could’ve been achieved without hard work. “Kumon has taught me about the importance of focusing and hard work,” said Pragun. “Great accomplishments don’t come naturally. More hard work is equal to greater success in Kumon and life.” Outside of the classroom, Pragun enjoys playing table tennis with his father, spending time with friends, and reading. Pragun’s hard work and discipline didn’t go unnoticed, as he was one of 55 students selected to attend the 2018 Kumon Student Conference in Calgary, Canada. American International School of Freetown

American International School of Freetown American International School of Freetown The American International School of Freetown is the only US Embassy sponsored school in Sierra Leone. In 1986, the US Embassy requested permission of the Sierra Leone government to establish a school to educate the children of the diplomatic staff of the official US Mission. Since then the student body has grown more diverse in nationalities and now includes children from many countries, including Sierra Leone. AISF has always been a small school, averaging a population of 70 in grades Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 8. The school is accredited in good standing by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and offers a US curriculum based on recognized US educational standards. Curriculum is enriched, especially in the early years, with resources and teaching techniques from the UK. The facility on approximately 3 hectares was designed originally for the British colonial government and later the British High Commission. Our location is high in the hills above the sea and commands panoramic views. While adequate for our size there is limited area for outdoor sports. Classrooms are spacious and well furnished. All educational resources are imported from the US and the UK. Technology is fully integrated into teaching and learning from grade 2 to grade 8, featuring 1:1 iPads and a BYOD program from grades 4 to 8. SierraLeone is an extremely small and economically poor West African nation, which has suffered greatly in the past 25 years from civil war and then the recent West African Ebola epidemic. Recovery is coming slowly and most diplomatic and aid organizations have lifted their bans on allowing dependents. AISF opened this past September with 20 students and has grown to 31 children. We expect 50 to 60% growth in the coming school year. The school uses blended multi-age and grade classes with highly skilled differentiation. Each expatriate teacher has a qualified, trained teaching assistant, and in the early years programs there are two assistants. Class size in 2016/2017 is estimated at 10 children in a combined class. AISF needs strong, dedicated educators, rich in imagination and committed to a team approach.

Chemistry Placement Test Review

Chemistry Placement Test ReviewWhen I was in college, I had a test I took in chemistry that was dreaded by many students. That test was the AP Chemistry Placement Test, and although it is not the most difficult exam to get an A in, it is not exactly the easiest one to get an A+ in either. Not surprisingly, many students find it intimidating, while others have already studied all they can about chemistry and are confident they know what they are doing with that test.Chemicals react in chemical reactions in order to give us food, clothing, electricity, water, and other useful items. All of these things rely on chemical reactions to be done. It is the ability to predict chemical reactions accurately and correctly that allows us to effectively use chemistry as a tool to aid us in our lives. You might say to yourself that this sounds easy, but how do you actually calculate the chemical reaction? Well, luckily for you, there is a chemistry placement test review that will teach you all the s teps necessary to calculate a chemical reaction. We will walk you through the steps of chemical analysis from beginning to end, covering chemical reactions, definitions, understanding the units used, and explaining the molecules that make up the chemical reaction. After we finish, you should be able to successfully calculate the correct solution for any chemical reaction you encounter during a laboratory assignment. To prepare for your chemistry placement test, we suggest that you use the reviews we provide as a guide, but that you use them to develop your own strategies for calculating reactions. In addition, if you are looking for a very thorough and detailed review, then we strongly recommend that you find a chemical chemistry review that provides detailed step-by-step details, so that you can maximize your learning and start applying those techniques right away.As far as our reviews go, most of them can be found online, and you may need to do some research before you locate one t hat meets your needs.A good place to start is to look at the listings of different review sites, and compare the reviews there to determine which sites are the best suited for your needs.Tests like this will be designed to teach you what is needed to know, and how to use those skills to pass the AP Chemistry Placement Test. This test should be challenging, but not too much so, so as long as you study the review materials, follow the tips, and practice what you learn on tests, you should do fine. The reviews we provide are free and may need to be used to help you prepare for the test, but they are free, and may be well worth the time and effort. If you do not have the time or resources to study or practice, then we strongly recommend that you find a review that is worth the time and money and help you prepare for the AP Chemistry Placement Test with confidence.

How to Make the Most of College Rankings

How to Make the Most of College Rankings The following piece was written by Kofi Kankam. Kofi has been featured in ourAdmissions Expert seriesand is a former admissions interviewer for The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. He is also the co-founder of Admit Advantage. Every year, eager college prospects, parents, and folks in admissions alike clamor for various reports on college rankings. With our insatiable need for statistics and superficial information overload, we review the lists for validation (Yes, our ivy-covered towers are still standing strong!), redemption (Fingers crossed, please let our ranking improve from last years abysmal standing!), or the recognition we so desperately crave (Look at us, look at us were an awesome school that youve just never heard of!). What I would suggest, however, is that you look at the college rankings in a different, more meaningful light: 1. Consider the information as merely one data point among many as you evaluate colleges; 2. Use the information to shed light on schools that were perhaps not previously on your radar; and 3. Read the articles that often accompany these lists rather than just perusing the statistics, as they often highlight interesting programs and opportunities at schools that would otherwise be missed in merely scanning the numbers. One Data Point in a Sea of Many The college selection process should be just that: a process. No one thing be it a particular class, professor, friend, parent, statistic, or coveted school ranking should be the single deciding factor in your school selections. Rather, multiple criteria should be used in aggregate to support the selection or dismissal of each school under consideration. Not all of your selection criteria should be considered equally, so this is something that each student must figure out for himself. Prioritize your college essentials based on what is most important to you. For some students, a specific major followed by a cultural climate of tolerance and location may be the driving forces behind his school selections. For others, the chance to conduct research on the undergraduate level, small class size, and Division I athletics may be the most important considerations. College rankings, be it from a trusted internet source or a traditional print publication, are only one metric of how well col leges and universities are doing across the country, not necessarily the most important and certainly not the only. See the Possibilities and Not Just the Obvious: Name Recognition is Not Everything! When I reach for a coveted report on college rankings and I flip through the pages to discover that Princeton is ranked number one with Harvard, Yale, Columbia, and Stanford trailing closely behind, I can honestly say that Im not shocked. Nor, I suspect, are you. There are going to be lots of obvious choices on most college rankings lists, especially considering many of the standard metrics commonly used: peer assessments, faculty resources, yield, selectivity, and alumni giving. The top 20 schools on most best colleges lists are almost always easily recognized throughout America and the world, and aptly so, admission to one of these elite institutions will inevitably be difficult. But heres where I think the lists get more interesting, or at the very least, less predictable drop down into that 20 and above category and you might discover some of the lesser-known schools that may be the real gems. Consider a school like Case Western Reserve, an academic stronghold in Ohio with formidable programs in the Sciences and located in a cultural hub in Cleveland. Look to the north and discover Northeastern University, a school that both recognizes the value of real world experience and then requires students to go about developing some of it before graduation in their cooperative education program. Destined for a career as an engineer? Consider Rensselaer in New York, which offered admission to 44% of its applicants vs. a paltry 9% offered at the more widely known and prestigious MIT. I could pick and choose additional schools from a number of reputable sources that probably arent cracking anybodys top 20 list and use the next 10 pages to highlight why you might consi der them. The point is this: the more open you enter this evaluative process of colleges, the greater the possibility of discovering that the number of rich and rewarding programs being offered is almost endless. Dont Forget to Read the Articles: Yes, More Reading! As fascinating as a list (or a series of lists) might be, theyre still merely lists, and only so much useful information can be gleaned from them. Step back from the numbers and read some of the anecdotal stories provided by students highlighting their experiences and why they chose particular schools. Or read the pieces that challenge you, as the applicant, to do an assessment of your college, learning values, and priorities. Scan the articles about interesting majors and real-world experience that will help you land a job post-graduation. From year to year and publication to publication, the focus of these articles that accompany these lists will vary somewhat, but the topics will be relevant and encourage you to stay in the moment as you walk through the college selection and application process.
